Discover Asunción, the ‘Mother of Cities’,and see and learn of all its main attractions in this three-hour guided tour of the city. Sights include: the National Heroes Pantheon, Independence House, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the old Parliament, the Government Palace, the Congress building, the old Train Station, the Port, local craft markets and more.
Lying between Palma and Chile streets in downtown Asuncion is the National Pantheon of Heroes. A place of national significance, it is a mausoleum wherein lie the remains of the great heroes of Paraguayan history. A visit to Independence House and its museum will allow you to see artefacts and photos from the declaration of independence in 1811. Just around the corner you can find the Central Post Office and the grand Metropolitan Cathedral, a beautiful pink-hued church with a stunning silver alter inside. The National Congress Building is one of the more modern buildings in the city nicknamed it the UFO because of its striking mirrored façade and rounded features. A visit to the old train station allows views of the old steam trains that now are used in tourist trips to the cities of Luque and Areguá.
Making a trip to La Recova, a craft market full of local handmade goods is well worth it and driving through the main residential neighbourhoods lets you see how real Paraguayans live. The Mburuvichá Roga, the official residence of the Nation's President demonstrates how the other side lives. Set among 20 hectares of gardens, this palatial building is living on a grand scale.
