Il programma nel dettaglio
Celebrate more than 5000 years of compelling history in the bustling metropolis of Izmir. Discover Turkey’s 3rd largest city and ‘pearl of Turkey’ on our fascinating half-day tour. During your day you will visit the Agora and marvel at artefacts in the Archaeological Museum before proceeding to Izmir’s iconic 100-year-old clock tower. You will also have the opportunity to see the remarkable old bazaar in the district of Kemeralti.
Your professionally guided tour begins at the famous Agora. Situated on the highest hill of Izmir, Agora means public square. Be mesmerised by this immense market square of Roman times, constructed during the rule of Alexander the Great. It is one of the best protected of all the Ionian agoras, hosting a central courtyard that is surrounded by columns and arches. Afterwards you will go to the Archaeological Museum where your guide will point out a treasure trove of artefacts on display, dating back to ancient times, including antiquities from the altar of the Agora. Then as your tour continues, take a leisurely stroll along the palm tree-lined streets to the city’s emblematic clock tower. This symbol of Izmir was designed by the Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Pere and is decorated in an intricate Ottoman style with Moorish inspired features.
But that’s not all. The jewel in the crown of this already engrossing city tour is an optional visit to Kermeralty, the oriental old city of Izmir. Prepare to be dazzled by the eastern exoticism of this traditional neighbourhood. The pulsating historical market is crammed full of artisan shops selling all manner of tempting bargains. You’ll have the chance to unwind as you shop for leather goods, jewellery and trinkets, or haggle over hand-woven carpets. Why not finish off your tour and rest those weary limbs by stopping to savour a delicious Turkish coffee or piping hot tea accompanied by a honey covered pastry, guaranteed to put a spring back in your step!
