Arequipa, Peru | Visite guidate |
Il programma nel dettaglio
Visit to the stunning vantage point at Carmen Alto, overlooking the River Chili (the city's main river), which gives beautiful panoramic views of the historic city. This is followed by a visit to Yanahuara, a traditional Arequipa neighbourhood, with a multitude of cobbled streets and one of the best examples of Cuzco mestizo religious architecture.
Then we move to the Main Square, one of Peru's most attractive, because of its use of sillar (a white volcanic stone from which many buildings in the city are made), its carved arcades. We check out the exterior of the neighbouring cathedral, originally built in the 17th century and rebuilt completely several times after earthquakes. From there we go to the Church of the Society of Jesus (1590), a classic example of local Baroque architecture, which contains an exceptional collection of paintings and murals.
Arequipa, also known as the white city, is the second most populous city in Peru. It is an important commercial centre and the second most industrialized city in the country, including manufacturing and exporting high quality wool. The city was founded in 1540 under the name of Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The colonial-era old town is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
