Made by foodies, for foodies, this Shanghai food tour was designed for those who love to nibble, munch, and completely devour authentic Chinese cuisine.
You’ll meet your food-loving local guide at the Jing’an Temple and then be taken to your first tasty stop, one of the most renowned vegetarian noodle restaurants in town. Here you’ll be able to sample different veggie options and your guide will give you recommendations and tips about the most popular things on the menu.
From here, your Shanghai culinary tour will head to a typical Chinese food store where locals go to shop for all the ingredients used in traditional family dishes. In this store you’ll be spoilt for choice with the array of snack samples on offer! Your guide will be able to give you pointers on what to choose, such as the pork mooncake, an unmissable Shanghai treat, yaxue fensi tang (duck blood tofu and rice noodle soup), and ma la tang (spicy vegetarian soup).
Next you’ll take a walk through a residential area in Shanghai where you’ll gain an insight into the daily lives of the locals and your belly can have a little break… but not for too long! After this meander through a homely neighbourhood, you’ll stop at a fresh food market where you’ll learn all about the balanced diet of the locals. Our local guide will let you in on the secrets about how to pick up the freshest produce in the market, tips that you will even be able to use for your own shopping at home!
The final stop on this Shanghai food tour will be at a traditional Chinese restaurant famous for its bakery packed full of delicious bites. From xie ke bao (crab shell pie) to sheng jian bao (fried buns), cong you bing (green onion pancakes) - this place has it all. There couldn’t be a better finale for your Shanghai food experience! If you’re having trouble choosing, your local guide will be able to point out the delicacies and local favourites, and you can pick and choose with others in your group so that you have the chance to taste as much as possible. Your guide will also be able to teach you some Chinese phrases so that you can order from the staff just like the locals do. Don’t be shy – they’ll love it!
Your Shanghai tour will finish in the same spot as it began, and your local guide will be able to give you directions either back to your accommodation, or to other popular hangouts to continue on your Shanghai adventure. When it comes to food tours in Shanghai, this is one you just can't miss.
