Unesco-designated World Heritage Site Monte Alban is one of the greatest archaeological sites in the Oaxaca Valley. Its history can be traced back to around 500 B.C. when Zapotec builders began levelling the mountaintop and constructing terraces and other works. Around 800 A.D. the Zapotec people abandoned the city for reasons unknown. The Mixtec people later entered the Valley of Oaxaca in 1200 AD and used the Monte Alban site to bury their elite.
After hotel pick-up, you’ll travel by comfortable coach to the site, situated just 20 minutes away. Explore the massive, well-preserved complex on foot with your professional guide who will provide you with plenty of background to the history of this fascinating site. Visit pyramids, temples and altars, as well as several residential structures – all built around the rectangular Grand Plaza, a large open area on the flattened plateau.
Marvel at the ball court dating back to 100 BC, and then climb up to the Southern Platform, famous, for its wide staircase and great panoramic views. Admire the wonderful series of rock carvings known as The Dancers and wander around some of Monte Alban’s 170 tombs. You’ll also have plenty of free time to explore on your own before re-boarding your coach back to Oaxaca, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel.
