The Stingaree was a neighborhood until the beginning of the 20th century. It was the home of vice and undesirable people including drug pimps, dealers, prostitutes and gamblers and was also the location of San Diego's Chinatown. Many lower-class citizens lived there and many blue-collar residential areas surrounded this area. Its name comes from stingray.

At the beginning of last century hundreds of buildings were destroyed and many dwellers were left homeless. Extensive raids against prostitution and massage parlours took place but redevelopment did not come until the 1980s when the wild character of the neighbourhood was removed. Compulsory purchase, tax increment financing and other techniques were used in order to eradicate red light establishments and to steer the area towards an upscale shopping area: the Gaslamp Quarter.

Between the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries the city's Chinatown was here. Chinese people were emarginated by mainstream rejection, labour discrimination and restrictions on fishing, their main economic activity. Chinatown transformed into a ghetto and many residents became prey of opium and gambling.
