The Caldera de Taburiente is one of the largest erosion craters in the world. The interior of the Caldera is a natural paradise where you'll find rushing streams, waterfalls, emerald green meadows and wide variety of plants with a stunning display of thousands of wild flowers in springtime, all surrounded by a circle of mountains nearly 2500 metres high where the highest peaks plunge 1000m down into the crater.
After crossing the Barranco de Las Angustias Gorge, we'll climb a winding path leading us to Los Brecitos (1040 metres above sea level). From here we'll follow a well-kept track down to the floor of the Caldera, passing the semi-abandoned farms at Ternera and Taburiente. The Camping Area on the banks of the Taburiente River, is an ideal spot for enjoying the splendid scenery all around us.
We'll cross the stream and enter the Barranco del Almendro Amargo a narrow gorge that meets the Barranco de Las Angustias soon afterwards. We'll spend two hours walking down this spectacular gorge where water erosion has exposed layers of rock, interspersed with pillow lava from underwater eruptions. Throughout this stretch, we are accompanied by the stream that forms small pools of crystal clear water and lovely waterfalls from time to time.
Meeting/ pick up point: Hotel pick up.
Duration: 7 hours.
Start or opening time: Fuencaliente 8.15am, Puerto Naos and Cancajos 8.30am. Hike starts at 10am.
End or closing time: Hike ends at 5pm.
Languages: English, German, Dutch, Spanish.
Others: Remember to wear comfortable clothing, windbreaker, hiking boots, backpack and sun protection.
