Lively by day, Milan comes in to its own at night as the floodlights illuminate the vias and piazzas, and with the Gothic façade of the Duomo appearing even more intricate than by day. The fun kicks off with a happy hour drinking experience and be warned that even by Italian standards, Milan’s nightlife is legendary. Its bar culture is the envy of other cities and despite the efforts of some to dilute it; it remains as sophisticated as ever.

Whether you want to taste Italian wines or apéritifs and digestifs (this is the country that gave the world vermouth, grappa and limoncello to name but a few) you will find them in the bars of Navigli. This picturesque district takes its name from the canals that connected Milan with other towns in Lombardy until they fell into disuse in the middle of the last century. Nowadays, the walls of the canal banks are the centrepiece of Milanese social life as chicly dressed gilded youth lean against them observing passers-by.
