The airy perspective of the straight, tree-lined streets and the architecture of the buildings reveal the nineteenth century changes to the city layout made when La Spezia became a base for the Italian Navy in 1869. This recent history can be re-lived at the Arsenale (ship-fitting yard) and the Naval Museum, rich in relics, weaponry and model ships.
