The Brabo fountain, the Renaissance City Hall and the 16th and 17th century guildhouses catch the eye. Next, we will visit the Cathedral of Our Lady (entrance fee not included), the largest Gothic church of the Low Countries.
This magnificent Gothic church has great pieces of art by PP Rubens and other Flemish masters. We will walk through the ‘Vlaeykensgang’, a medieval quarter full of alleys and cul-de-sacs. Via the Groenplaats and the Meir (Antwerp’s most popular shopping street), we will walk along the Rubenshouse museum (visit outside only) towards the diamond district. For centuries Antwerp has been synonymous with diamonds. Although diamond processing has been largely relocated to other continents, the diamond trade itself is still firmly rooted in Antwerp. With people from all nationalities it is a colourful quarter where the Jewish community makes its presence very much felt.
After a stroll in this fancy neighbourhood, we will visit the Antwerp Central train station. Due to its late 19th century eclectic style the building is dubbed ‘The Railway Cathedral’ by Antwerp’s inhabitants.
