This is a wonderful alternative to an airboat ride … quiet and peaceful. Enjoy a leisurely paddle with a naturalist guide in a unique part of the Everglades.
Throughout the mangrove forest are brackish "lakes" whose waters are a mix of "sweet" fresh water and salt water. The lakes are nursery grounds for alligators, otters, herons, egrets, stilts, ducks, wood storks, spoonbills and a gamut of fishes. There are beautiful butterflies, abundant bromeliads (air plants), fabulous ferns and gorgeous wildflowers, including at least seven different species of wild orchids blooming at throughout the year… these are NOT the things that most people expect in the wilds of the Everglades!
Interconnecting these lakes are narrow, flowing tidal creeks. The mangrove forest grows to the very edge and over the tops of these creeks, forming a canopy above. The dense canopy regulates moisture and humidity allowing orchids and bromeliads to thrive. The sunlight shimmering through the canopy, the stillness of the forest vegetation and the sounds of the forest itself, make for a surreal experience in the tunnels. We use single and two-person kayaks and you do not need previous kayaking experience!
