An opportunity to see the spectacular ancient city of Ephesus, mentioned in the Bible and where St Paul preached to its’ citizens on three separate occasions. Dating from the 10th Century BC, it was during the Roman period that the city became one of the largest in Roman Asia Minor. Some of the city’s most beautiful buildings have been excavated including the 25,000 seater amphitheatre, the Temple of Hadrian, terraced Roman villas and the beautiful Selcuk Library.
Tour departs heading northwest and passing through some spectacular scenery; a comfort stop is given on the way. On arrival we visit the present day town of Ephesus known as Selcuk; this is where the artefacts from the ancient site of Ephesus are on display in the Ephesus Museum. After lunch we move on to the site where one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis used to stand – most of it can now be seen in the British Museum. This is followed by a visit to the ancient city itself for a fascinating tour through the marble streets and remnants of an important, ancient trading city.
Before heading back for Fethiye we visit the House of the Virgin Mary in its’ tranquil spot on Mt Nightingale. Said to be the resting place of the Virgin Mary, there is a sanctuary here sanctified by the Roman Catholic Church.
