Driving through much of western Turkey, known as the Aegean after the Aegean Sea which borders the western coast, this full day tour takes us to Pamukkale or Cotton Castle, a natural phenomenon where hot calcium spring water has run down the hillside for centuries leaving deposits of carbonate minerals which have formed these natural travertines and terraces. These hot springs have been used as a spa since the 2nd century BC. A fantastic photographic opportunity, walking on top of the travertines is no longer permitted as a conservation measure.
At the top of the travertines is the ancient city of Hierapolis, dating from the Hellenistic and Roman eras. Here one can see the magnificently preserved and vast Necropolis of the ancient Hellenistic world, Roman basilica baths, Domitian Gate, Roman fountains, the Grand amphitheatre, as well as other monuments at the site. The Antique Pool where Cleopatra is said to have bathed is fed by the same spring waters as the travertines which are said to have many natural healing properties. Swimming over ancient columns and ruins in warm, bubbly water is an experience not to be missed so swimwear and towels are recommended (entrance fee not included in the tour).
