Program details

You get to take a trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre of Rome and enter Tivoli, a small, ancient town in Lazio. The resort is famed for its spectacular image and its good water, as well as its many Roman Villas. Here you will be able to discover two of the main villas in the town and be taken on a guided tour around each of them.

Firstly is the Villa d’Este which is a beautiful garden and palace complex, lited on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The villa was built in 1560 and is famous for its magnificent garden of grottoes, fountains and water sculptures. Over the many centuries the villa and its gardens have been remodelled, left to decay, renovated, bombed and finally put into the hands of the Italian government who decided to open up the building to the public.

The second villa available to view is Hadrian’s Villa, a retreat for Emperor Hadrian during the 2nd Century. During the later years of his reign, Hadrian actually governed the empire from within the villa itself and since his death it was used by other emperors which followed him. The villa fell into disuse and became ruined during the decline of the empire and now remains today in its ruined state, kept as it always was. This tour is definitely one for those who are interested in the history of the empire and want to know how the emperors of the Roman era lived.
