Come with us and visit one of the oldest cities in Portugal. Braga wonders with the charm of an ancient as well as modern city. The name stems from the Proto-Celtic word “Bracara”, home of the Bracari Celtic tribe, who lived in hillside forts known as the “Castro culture” until these were subdued by the Roman empire. The city itself was founded as “Bracara Augusta” in 20 BC, during the rule of Emperor Augustus, to later pass into Visigothic hands, when it played an important part in the Christianization of the Iberian Peninsula. During the Christian “Reconquista”, it was the spiritual center of Iberia, until the rise of Santiago de Compostela.
