Referring to a vast area of over seven hectares, this is more than just any ordinary castle. Perched high over the city with fantastic views a labyrinth of palaces, churches, monasteries, museums, fortifications and watch towers awaits the curious visitor.
We start off by visiting three courtyards of the castle and then stop at perhaps the most emblematic of the buildings within the complex: St. Vitus Cathedral, a superb gothic masterpiece built in the 14th century. Look out for the fantastic stained glass windows, the chapel of St. Wenceslas and the impressive tomb of San Giovanni Nepomuceno.
We now turn to the Old Royal Palace, with its ‘Riders staircase’ and the stunning vaulted Vladislav hall. In this historic palace the Defenestration of Prague, the symbolic beginning of the Thirty Years War took place.
We move on to Golden Lane, where Franz Kafka once lived. These pretty cottages were originally the abodes of goldsmiths and artisans hence the name. Finally we descend the Castle Steps to the level of the city enjoying a memorable panoramic view over the Lesser Town Square on the way. There is an optional drop off at the church of Our Lady of Victory home to the Spanish image of the Infant Jesus of Prague which is especially venerated by Christians in Latin America.
