On this tour, you will know the splendor of old civilizations that have left their mark on our culture, landscapes, and traditions. Come to know Segobriga Archaeological Park and Ucles Monastery. Taste wine and typical products of La Mancha.
Segóbriga, the old Roman city, was the capital of the mining district of Lapis Specularis, this mineral was a luxury item for the Romans until the development of glass. Segobriga became one of the wealthiest cities in Hispania.
We will see its streets, buildings, and temples... This archaeological site is one of the best examples of excavated Roman cities inland the Iberian peninsula, which offers us the possibility to know its incomparable forum, the old Roman theater or going down to the sand of its amphitheater, with capacity for more than 5,000 people so that we can feel like authentic gladiators from the 1st Century A.D. as if we were Máximo Décimo himself. But we will also visit its Roman public baths, where those Romans washed themselves up and kept an intense social life; or have a look to the circus where we glimpse what those impressive chariot races that cinema has recalled us could be.
This Monastery is the head of Santiago's Order. Here we can imagine medieval knights, poets, playwrights, and generals took a walk in the past...Visiting Uclés is like visiting History, wandering around is like taking a walk by the old book’s pages depicting epic medieval jousts between horsemen brandishing their lances over white steeds. It also was in the seat of one of the most important Muslim castles of Cuenca, where king Alfonso VI fought against Almoravids. Whereas the castle is impressive, its monastery is majestic; 'El Escorial of La Mancha'was the main headquarters of the Military Order of Santiago, where Jorge Manrique was buried and Quevedo was imprisoned.
Here we'll also brighten up our day by a tasting of D.O. Uclés wines, besides several dishes from our gastronomy, like “atascaburras”, “morteruelo”, pickled red partridge and above all, the famous HeraSSanz cheese made from raw sheep's milk.
