Follow in the hallowed footsteps of pilgrims over the centuries with this day trip to Santiago de Compostela and Valença do Minho, two incredible medieval towns in Portugal and Northern Spain. Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia, in Spain, famous for the shrine of St James the Great now housed in its magnificent cathedral.
After being collected from your hotel in Porto, head to Santiago de Compostela through the beautiful rural scenery. Enjoy some free time in this incredible city, a center of Catholic life for hundreds of years. You might like to attend the Pilgrim’s Mass, held daily at noon, where they name those pilgrims who have successfully reached Santiago de Compostela the previous day. There’s plenty of time to explore the magnificent Cathedral, the small winding streets of the center, and the beautiful old buildings.
Continue your journey to the busy city of Valença do Minho, famous for its commerce and trading spirit. Roam the streets and witness the independent shops and stalls, selling artisanal products. Next, we’ll make our way to Valença’s Fortress, the highlight of this charming city. This 13th Century structure is a real treat, filled with bulwarked walls and moats to protect the town from invasions from the Spanish and French. Boasting impressive views, look out over the River Minho and across into Galicia.
