Program details
Depart from Antigua to the Western Highlands, one of the most spectacular and postcard-worthy regions of Guatemala, home to colourful hills, lakes and forests. It is also where most of Guatemala's indigenous population lives. Once at Chichicastenango Market, begin your walking tour into the centre of commercial life for maxenos (natives of Chichicastenango). Merchants flock to the central plaza every Thursday and Sunday to sell their products. This timeless market has hardly changed over time and conserves its traditional charm. While here you will also visit St Thomas Church, a great example of colonial architecture erected in 1540 on the base of a pre-Hispanic temple.
After lunch, continue to the town of Panajachel, on Lake Atitlan, where you will head to Santander Street for one of the best views of the lake and the surrounding volcanoes: Toliman, Atitlan and San Pedro. These form the natural frame of the lake, which has a surface of 125 square kilometres and lies 1560 meters above sea level. All in all, it is a day to take in the beauty of nature and traditional life.
