Program details
Enjoy the fun and camaraderie of building an igloo brick by brick high in the Andorran Pyrenees. Constructing one of these traditional Inuit homes has been described as high-octane Lego – and this is your chance to take part in a wonderful and exciting experience.
Everyone has seen pictures of and heard tales about igloos when growing up but few of us have ever had the chance to actually build one. Now you can join the ranks of the privileged few with this one-and-a-half-hour igloo building class.
The excitement starts as you are placed into a construction team. The informative instructor equips you with the basic but necessary tools of a saw and a shovel - and your hands do the rest. You are then guided through some authentic Inuit techniques before being let loose on your own igloo.
Learn how to select the site and to make an initial clearing for the construction then get to grips with the saw as you discover how to cut out the blocks from the compact snow. Spiralling up and up you see your cool new home grow until you reach the all-critical final block of the dome. Will it collapse or will it hold? If you’ve done it properly, it should hold and, as long as you have remembered to put in an entrance, you should now have a fantastic new igloo fit for a real Inuit.
