Program details
Escape the baroque beauty of Salzburg for the natural charms of the Salzkammergut, the lake and mountain district to the east of the city. Discover the lakeside hamlets, beautiful villages, ancient castles, romantic lakes and majestic mountains of this stunningly beautiful region with this four-hour tour. During summer months there is a scenic lake cruise.
Travel through the pristine pastoral landscapes of the Alpine foothills towards the lakeside villages of Hof and Fuschl before arriving at St Gilgen (where Mozart's mother was born). This pretty town also sits on the shores of a lake, the Wolfgangsee. Continue along the lake to the spa village of St Wolfgang. Wander through the picturesque streets, admiring the church with its distinct onion dome belfry. From May to October, the tour includes a boat trip on the Wolfgangsee. Enjoy more stunning scenery by Lake Krottensee, passing by Huttenstein Castle and the lakeside village of Mondsee, where the wedding scene in The Sound of Music was filmed at the beautiful baroque Collegiate Church of St Michael.
Continue to the delightful town of St Wolfgang, which sits at the foot of Schafberg mountain on the shores of the Abersee, as the western end of the Wolfgangsee is known. St Wolfgang has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and the parish church boasts a glorious Gothic altarpiece by the renowned artist Michael Pacher. The popular operetta, The White Horse Inn, is set in the inn of the same name and there are many beautiful houses with painted façades.
