Live the great outdoors to the full and breathe in the fresh air of the Bavarian Alps with this scenic tour from Salzburg. Visit the fascinating and picturesque Berchtesgaden area, passing, the castles, onion-domed churches, charming villages, beautiful lakes and majestic mountains of this natural wonderland.
Head south out of Salzburg, past the beautiful baroque Hellbrunn Palace, into the sensational Salzburgerland countryside, famed for the salt mines of its rolling hills. Cross the border into Bavaria, with a first stop at the breathtaking Konigsee, the ‘king’s lake’, in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park, which is a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. Its stunning setting, surrounded by sheer rock walls of mountain and verdant forests, has earned it the title of the ‘prettiest lake in Germany’. Marvel at the majestic scenery with the Bavarian Alps towering above you, providing a magnificent backdrop to the lake.
Continue to the village of Berchtesgaden, nestled into the surrounding mountains. Enjoy a pleasant stroll through this friendly town which has many historic buildings and churches, and is renowned for its shops. Wander the medieval streets, which all seem to lead to the gorgeous Schlosplatz, and admire the houses frith frescoed façades (Lüftlmalerei) and traditional Alpine roofs. Maybe stop in a local café and try a local speciality or two. The town is a popular winter sports centre and has produced a number of skiing and mountaineering champions.
