Such is the breath and scale of the Lednice-Valtice complex that is has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. The area now straddles the Austrian and Czech border but has been settled since at least Roman times, when the legions of Marcus Aurelius planted the first vines, thus establishing a winemaking tradition that continues to this day. Lednice and Valtice castles are connected by a 7km-long tree-lined avenue. Each castle boasts different features. Lednice is in the Gothic revival style while Valtice is baroque. Their surrounds include an elegant French garden and a beautiful English park with ponds covered with water lilies as well as verdant forests, meadows full of flowers and countless trees.

Explore the chateau and stroll through the gardens, enjoy lunch here and then ride around the Lednice ponds. Perhaps you can trek to the Temple of the Three Graces of St Hubert’s Chapel, or even to the 60 metre-tall minaret that offers breathtaking views over this unrivalled cultural landscape. The neo-classical Border House stands directly on the frontier between the Czech Republic and Austria. There is so much to see and do. The wine tasting and cellar tour costs an almost symbolic admission price while other optional extras include a visit to a palm glasshouse, canal boat trips and horse carriage rides to the ruins of Janohrad.
