Immerse yourself in two great Hungarian traditions with this fascinating tour that takes in the world-famous Herend hand-painted porcelain factory and the beauty of Lake Balaton, just over an hour away from Budapest. Drive along the picturesque Hungarian countryside, enjoying pastoral scenes and learning about the region’s rich history.
First stop is the Herend porcelain factory, which is said to be the largest of its kind in the world. The company was founded in 1826 and was a purveyor to the Habsburg dynasty and other royal families as well as a many of Europe’s leading industrialists. The guided tour takes you through the many rooms as you explore the history and manufacturing processes of this exclusive pottery. Enjoy a complimentary coffee and maybe buy a souvenir or two before carrying on to the next destination.
Drive to scenic Lake Balaton, which is central Europe’s largest lake. Take in the splendid surroundings and breathe in the fresh air during a visit to the historic Tihany peninsula, which boasts a picture-postcard village and a number of beautiful baroque buildings. Explore the abbey, where the oldest example of written Hungarian is kept.
Pause for lunch (not included) before heading to Balatonfüred to discover one of the oldest spas in Hungary. Since 1772, visitors have been flocking here to enjoy the carbonated springs and to rejuvenate their bodies and souls. Take a stroll along the famous promenade and sample the tranquillity of this idyllic setting all for yourself.
