In the intensely traditional world of bullfighting one coliseum stands head and shoulders above the others: Las Ventas in Madrid. This fascinating visit to the most famous bullring in the world allows you an insight into Spain’s fiesta nacional as you learn the lore and history behind this most controversial of spectacles from an audioguide.

See the tendidos (the bleachers), the arena, the pens where the bulls wait before entering the ring and where the matadors build up their courage, the infirmary, the Puerta Grande - where the fighters dream of being carried out aloft after a successful corrida - and the souvenir shop.



Built in neo-Mudejar between 1929 and 1931, Las Ventas has a capacity for almost 24,000 fans, making it the third largest bullring in the world. It has witnessed some of the most dramatic fights in history, with fewer than 100 matadors earning the right to leave by the Puerta Grande. Over the decades, illustrious bullfighting aficionados such as Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles made the yearly pilgrimage to this Mecca for the corridas.
