Head for the highlands of Cyprus to breathe in the fresh air, enjoy the stunning views and stumble upon a treasure. The Troodos Mountains are no ordinary range; here you will find a wealth of cultural and religious monuments, including nine Byzantine churches and a monastery that make up a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Crowned by the majestic Mount Olympus, the range is a favourite retreat for Cypriots and visitors looking to escape the Mediterranean beach life. The trek into the Troodos is not just a journey into the wild, it’s also a voyage back in time to an older and wiser Cyprus; a world away from the bustle of the coast.
High in the Troodos there are dozens of hillside hamlets, many from a land that time forgot. There are wild waterfalls and verdant valleys, forests as far as the eye can see and, in winter, snowcapped peaks.
You will visit the fabulous Kykkos Monastery, one of the most revered in Cyprus. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whose icon is encased in silver as it’s forbidden for anyone to look at it directly. The monastery was founded by the Byzantines in 1092 and is renowned for its wealth of frescoes, colourful mosaics, gold icons and glittering ornamentation. There will also be a visit to the nearby tomb of Archbishop Makarios, the first president of Cyprus after independence.
