Program details
Cross the Green Line dividing Cyprus and enter a world of mosques, minarets and bazaars, and discover the historic city of Kyrenia in the north. This full-day guided tour will take you to a region that until recently was impossible to cross from the south. It is a journey that has the air of forbidden fruit and even echoes of a Cold War spy thriller.
Join us on this exclusive excursion into the virtually occupied northern part of Cyprus. As we drive through the Venetian Walls of Nicosia before crossing the Green Line into capital’s Turkish sector, the difference is immediately noticeable, with the appearance of an older, more traditional town than the modern southern sector.
We’ll head to the Pentadaktylos Mountain to the ruins of the once magnificent – and still impressive – 800-year old Abbey of Bellapais, which boasts spectacular views down to Kyrenia on the coast and across the northern plains. You’ll have free time for lunch in Kyrenia itself, where the imposing Venetian castle still stands guard over the city at the end of the harbour.
This excursion offers a rare opportunity to visit the north of the island, which for four decades, has been separated from the southern Greek-speaking and largely Orthodox part by a buffer zone of barbed-wire fencing, concrete walls, watchtowers, ditches and other obstacles.
