Program details
Escape the hustle and bustle of Rome and retreat to the rustic charms of Tuscany with this guided tour that takes in rolling countryside, historic towns and hearty cuisine.
You will visit the scenic region of the Val d’Orcia, which is famed for its gentle rolling hills, occasionally punctured by picturesque towns such as Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano. Such is its beauty that the whole valley has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Indulge in Montalcino, a stunning hill town that is the centre of the Brunello di Montalcino wine producing region. Protected by medieval walls and fortress, it has more than 20 historic religious buildings. We will then visit the wine cellar of Tenuta Poggio il Castellare for a traditional Tuscan lunch and taste three local wines.
Wander the almost-perfect streets Pienza, a town that was one of the world’s first examples of urban planning. It was the home town of Pope Pius II and under his auspices, it was demolished and rebuilt as an ‘ideal town’ featuring the best of Renaissance architecture. Pienza is also a Unesco World Heritage Site. Along the main street you will find grocers selling varieties of pecorino cheese as well as antique shops.
Discover Montepulciano and be seduced by the timeless beauty of this hill town, by its impressive architecture and its excellent wines. At its heart is the Piazza Grande, dominated by the cathedral, which contains priceless religious works of art. The town also has a number of outstanding civil and religious buildings, including the emblematic Tower of Pulcinella.
