Salta means leap in Spanish and to head north from the city to tour the remote hamlets and stunning scenery of Humahuaca is a genuine leap into unknown. Discover an arid landscape of badlands dotted with oversized cacti, multicoloured mountains and sleepy whitewashed pueblos. This is another, more Andean Argentina – one that few visitors have the chance of witnessing.

First stop is the village of Purmamarca, where sufficient time is allocated to view the Hill of Seven Colours and the 17th century church as well as to browse the craft market in the square and enjoy a short stroll through its narrow streets. Continue to Tilcara to visit the ancient ruins of Pucará and the archaeological museum and Huacalera before crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, where the colours of the Pollera del Coya Hill can be seen in all their glory and superb photos taken thanks to the extraordinary quality of the local light.

Visit Uquía and its church, where paintings of the Arcabuceros Angels (outstanding examples of the Cuzco School) are displayed. Arrive at Humahuaca itself by noon. Apart from its rustic church, the town is also famed for its striking independence monument, which sits atop a steep street. After lunch, see the ‘Painter’s Palette’, which frames the town of Maimara, on the way to San Salvador de Jujuy, with visits to the flag hall and the cathedral. Finally, return to Salta on a highway bounded by subtropical vegetation. The route passes El Abra de Santa Laura, La Cienaga Dam, Las Maderas and Campo Alegre through Vaqueros.
