As well as being a city that is rich in history, Salta boasts some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in the whole of Argentina and this tour of its high spots in the company of a knowledgeable guide is an ideal way to explore its attractions.

The neo-classical cathedral, dating from 1855, is a fine building in its own right and famous for being the last resting place of General Güemes, a revered national hero. This is followed by a visit to a building that was formerly the City Hall and now houses a history museum displaying exhibitions of sacred art (Salta is located at the southernmost end of what was the Inca empire) and rooms devoted to the city’s leading families. Within easy walking distance are the impressive San Francisco Church and San Bernardo Convent and the striking monument to General Güemes. Rising imposingly in the east is San Bernardo hill where visitors will be able to enjoy awe-inspiring panoramic views of the entire city and the valley beyond. This is followed by visits to the Battle of Salta Monument - commemorating the defence of the city in the War of Independence - the attractive 20 Febrero Park and a favourite summertime neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city called San Lorenzo, famous for its subtropical microclimate.

The tour ends with a visit to a craft market where skilled artisans from all over the province come to display their wares. The tour is available in Spanish and English. The tour lasts approximately three hours and visitors are recommended to wear light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes.
