Program details
Come along for a taste of Mendoza's agricultural oasis and wine region. Visit important traditional wineries and there you will have the opportunity to taste their delicious products. The Mendoza province accounts for nearly two-thirds of Argentina's wine production. It is located in the eastern foothills of the Andes, under Mount Aconcagua.
These vineyards grow at some of the highest altitudes in the world. The pink-skinned grapes of Criolla Grande and Cereza are giving way to premium wine varietals such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Chardonnay.
Next, we will go to the church of Carrodilla dedicated to the Virgin of Carrodilla, the saint patron of the vineyards. Adjacent to the church we find a small but beautiful museum with religious pieces. This church was the only temple of this area standing after the 1861 earthquake. The frontispiece bears a mosaic made in the city of Rosario and representing the Virgin on a cart in the vineyards.
The temple is home to the Virgin of Carrodilla, an oak carved image brought by Antonio de Solanilla from Spain at the end of the 18th century. The Virgin’s face and hands are coated with natural bee wax. Every year, at the Vendimia holiday, the image is carried by harvesters and wine producers in a procession to invoke protection for their harvests.
