The Workshops Rail Museum is a wholly interactive authentic heritage and cultural experience located at the birthplace of rail in Queensland. Explore more than 15 larger-than-life interactive exhibits, multimedia encounters and colourful stories which are coupled with huge steam locomotives, massive industrial machinery and over 140 years of history to make for a visitor experience second to none with unique sights, sounds and smells.
Go into the active railway workshops to see real restoration and maintenance work up close and get a behind-the-scenes tour into active heritage blacksmiths. Enjoy lunch from the café and receive a special memento of your visit.
The first train in Queensland run from this location to Grandchester and for many years this was the centre of rail construction and maintenance for Queensland: during WWII more than 3,000 people worked here. In 2002, the site became a museum dedicated to rail and its exhibits include: All Aboard, Diesel Revolution, Great Railway Journeys of Australia, Heritage Railway Workshops Tours, Ipswich Railway Workshops, I've Been Working on the Railway, Might & Muscle, Model Railway, More Than a Meal, Moving Goods, Museum Collection & Storage and Nippers Railway.
