Program details
Travel back in time to the astounding days of the Mayans. On this tour you will discover the archaeological site of Uaxactun, a location filled with amazing ruins of bygone days.
HIGHLIGHTS:
* Walk around and explore the ruins like a real Indiana Jones
* Visit a number of breath-taking ceremonial buildings and feel like you are in the past
* Includes lunch as well as transport to and from your hotel Your journey begins the moment you are whisked from your hotel and taken almost 20 kilometres north of the major centre of Tikal, to the ruins of Uaxactun. This is an ancient sacred place of the Maya civilisation, located in the region known as Peten Basin, in the Maya lowlands – nowadays the department of Peten, Guatemala.
Delve into a series of ceremonial buildings, including the majestic Temple of the Masks, a step pyramid decorated with enormous stucco masks. The sculptures depict creatures that were sacred for the Maya – such as jaguars, turtles, eagles, parrots... – and they symbolise the region's rulers and guardians. A renowned astronomical site, Uaxactun even counts with an observatory in Complex E, erected to mark the summer and winter solstices until the days when the city was abandoned in the faraway 10th century. You will have free time to wander around the ruins and enjoy lunch before being taken back to your hotel. All in all, at the end of the day you will feel more knowledgeable about the region's history and will have more than one story to tell.
