Program details

This tour is a great option to explore the history of the Jewish community in Kiev, as well as to discover the names of the great Jewish people that have contributed to the history of the city.

During first part of the tour you will visit the Jewish quarter, enter the main synagogue and see some monuments dedicated to famous Jewish people. The history of Kiev dates back many centuries, and is inseparable from the history of the local Jewish community, whose origin dates to the time of the pre-Christian Rus. There is a dispute among scholars about the starting point of the Jews of Kiev. However, nobody would dispute the actual fact of the existence of a very old Jewish community in the city.

Second part of the tour is a visit of Babiy Yar :
the monument reflects the tragic sadness of this time in history.
September 1941 saw the Nazi army move into the city of Kiev. For days bombs exploded in building in the centre of Kiev that had been occupied by the German army, Nazi soldiers and civilians were killed and injured. By the time the bombings stopped at the end of September the German Army already had a plan for retaliation. The German soldiers posted a notice all over Kiev which read: All Jews living in the City Of Kiev are to report by 8am on the morning of Monday September 29th at the corner of Melnikovsky & Dokhturov Streets. They are to take with them documents money & valuables as well as warm clothes. Any Jews not carrying out this instruction and are found elsewhere will be shot. Any civilian entering flats evacuated by the Jews and stealing property will be shot. 33000 Jews lost their lives during the genocide that occurred at Babi Yar.
