Program details
Your guide will collect you at your accommodation and take you out into the oldest of deserts. On your way out of town you will pass the “Martin Luther”, a steam powered tractor brought into the country to replace the problematic ox wagon transport through the desert. Your guide will also give you valued information on early colonial history. Along the course of the Swakop river bed you will pass several crop and leisure orientated farms. After a few kilometers the road ends and the tour enters the rugged moon landscape. In this desolate area your guide will introduce you to the so-called “musical stones” and point out a variety of geological features and minerals. Interesting plants like the Nara, the sensitive “living stones”, a variety of lichens, succulents of the desert and of course the world famous Welwitschia plants will be introduced to you. With some luck you may see ostrich, klipspringer, springbuck, jackal and a few of the endemic bird species. Drinks and a small lunch will be available to refresh you all along the way. On the return route one travels down the Swakop River canyon, passing the old police and customs post at Goanikontes. A breathtaking view of the entire moon landscape awaits you now. On the way back to Swakopmund a detour to the dune belt will round off an unforgettable desert experience. Your guide will drop you off at your accommodation or if you wish, somewhere in town.
