Visit some of the Oaxaca Valley’s world-famous craft markets in this morning trip to the settlements of Villa de Etla and San Agustin de Etla. Learn all about the history and culture of these picturesque villages in the company of a friendly local guide, as you explore the narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses and meet some of the local artisans.



Villa de Etla is a colonial-style town situated around 20km from Oaxaca, originally founded by the Spanish in the 17th century. It is centred on the church and former monastery of San Pedro y San Pablo, built from the striking local green sandstone.



The town is now famous for its Wednesday market or tlanguis, attracting artisans from all over the region, selling beautiful, locally manufactured pottery, leather belts and textiles as well as other handicrafts. This market also well-known for its locally produced variety of white cheese, known as Quesillo as well as the local specialities of tamales and barbecued goat cooked in traditional earthenware ovens.



From here it’s just a short drive to the nearby town of San Agustin de Etla. This small town houses the first ever ecological centre for the arts in Latin America, the Centro de las Artes de San Agustin, or CaSa, founded by Mexican artist Francisco Toledo in 2000. This fascinating centre for contemporary culture is housed in an old paper factory and you’ll find several large exhibition spaces, a massive library, photographic laboratories and workshops, all in a stun-ning natural setting.
