Program details
Spend a pleasant morning browsing the fantastic collection of art in Russia’s foremost museum for foreign art work as we visit the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art.
The exterior of the Pushkin museum reminds you of many other great European museums built in the period of the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Its impressive ionic columns were a copy of the Greek Acropolis which was so popular at the time. The museum was built on land granted to the University of Moscow and was founded by the great Russian scientist and professor at the University of Moscow, Ivan Tsvetaev. The grand opening ceremony, on the centenary of Napoleon’s defeat, saw the presence of Tsar Nicholas II and although it was originally planned as a repository of replicas belonging to the University, it became a museum as collections of Egyptian art and new European art grew, especially following the Bolshevik Revolution when private collections were ‘nationalised’.
Take a walk around and admire the many different exhibitions ranging from fascinating artefacts from ancient civilisations such as Greece and Egypt, to an incredible collection of Impressionist and Post Impressionist works. Breathtaking masterpieces of Italian, Flemish, German and French artists can all be seen up close including the famous ‘Portrait of an Old Woman’ by Rembrandt and various works by Botticelli and Veronese. Discover the ‘Troy treasures’ , a gold hoard dating back to 2500BC and marvel at the works of French Impressionist and Post-impressionists like Van Gough , Cezanne, Gauguin and Matisse.
