Head deep into the heart of the forbidding Mojave Desert and discover the Red Rock Canyon, one of its most beautiful areas. This six-hour tour follows a scenic route that takes in a number of sights and attractions such as the Calico Springs, the pre-historic rock art of Willow Springs and the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. You will be taken aback by how much there is to see so close to Las Vegas.



The fun starts at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area with a leisurely 21km (13 mile) loop drive along a beautifully rugged landscape. Pass by Calico Springs, a geological wonderland of cross-bedded Jurassic Aztec sandstone. See limestone roasting pits used by the Paiute tribe of Native Americans, who would cook agave hearts in them. Enjoy the views from High Point Overlook, which is almost 1,500 metres (5,000ft) above sea level, on the way to Willow Springs to admire the stunning rock art – known as petroglyphs and pictographs – which adorn the area, seeing the handprints of hunter-gatherers from thousands of years ago.



Continue to the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, a verdant oasis situated on the Old Spanish Trail, which aside from its rustic charms has as a claim to fame that it was once the plaything of eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes. A number of springs, which for centuries provided water for the Paiute, and cooler temperatures brought about by the high altitude and mountain cover combine to create a lush landscape that is in stark contrast to the surrounding areas.
