At Waimea, discover the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, 16km of shifting shadows and colours where the sun touches the slopes of this incredible natural gorge. Kauai is the oldest Hawaiian island, and this site tells the story of the volcanic collapse that created it. At Wailua River, cruise past the Fern Grotto, where ferns grow on the roof of the cave beneath the peak of the ‘forbidden mountain’, Mauna Kapu.



Russian Fort Elizabeth, just south of Waimea, was the last Russian fort on the Hawaiian Islands, dating from the 19th century. Get wet at Spouting Horn, where the surf channels into a blowhole and throws a spume of spray ten metres into the air. Tradition maintains that the roaring emanating from the blowhole is that of a trapped and furious lizard. Drive through the idyllic Poipu Resort and on to Koloa Sugar Mill, one of the first commercially successful sugar plantation buildings in Hawaii, founded in 1835. Spot Queen Victoria's profile, where if you look hard enough you can make out the stern face of the British monarch wagging her finger from the mountain tops. Finally, head to Nawiliwili Harbor, where cruise ships disembark and there’s ample shopping opportunities to round off a perfect day on this beautiful island.
