Explore typical adobe constructions as you learn all about the history of this once powerful ceremonial centre. We’ll also visit the nearby town of Mata Ortiz, internationally famous for the quality of its traditional pottery.
The adventure begins early in the morning as we drive north-westwards, heading for the Paquime Archaeological Site. The whole area was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1998. Learn all about this mysterious Pre-Hispanic culture based in the north western region of the western Sierra Madre mountains as you tour the typical adobe constructions, ceremonial centres and admire the beautiful clay vessels distinctive of this ancestral culture. We will also visit the renowned Museum of Northern Cultures, where an expert guide with provide you with plenty of fascinating details about the museum’s important collection of archaeological artefacts.
Then in the afternoon, we’ll travel on to the nearby town of Mata Ortiz. This small settlement is well-known for its artisans, who have revived the ancestral fabrication of clay vessels employing the same methods, style and decoration used by the ancient inhabitants of Paquime. You will be able to watch the potters at work and enjoy a delicious meal before heading back to Chihuahua.
