Once a resident of Madeira, Columbus would frequently drop anchor in Funchal’s harbor and his son Diego was born on these shores. This sailing trip will take you on a stunning journey along Maderia’s southern coast, taking in Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in the world, multiple swimming and snorkeling stops and even the possibility of seeing dolphins, turtles and whales alongside the boat. Feel like a true explorer as you recreate Columbus’s epic voyage.


One of the three ships Columbus sailed west in search of the Indies, the Santa Maria is a beautiful vessel with its white sails billowing in the wind. It has been the subject of numerous international documentaries including the famous “Quest for Columbus” on the Discovery Channel. Marvel at its intricate engineering as the captain gives the command to unfurl the sails and you are swept majestically along Maderia’s southern coast.


Be sure to bring a snorkel and mask if you want to explore the crystal clear water of the Atlantic for yourself. The boat will make a swimming stop for you to enjoy the blue waters under the imposing cliffs of Cabo Girão. Back on board the legendary Madeira honey cakes and local Madeira wine is offered to all guests free of charge. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled because if you are lucky the dolphins, turtles and whales that call this water their home may pay a visit to the Santa Maria.
