Program details
The best way to see the city that got America moving and dancing is with this walking tour of Downtown Detroit.Live and breathe the energetic atmosphere of the home of the blues, admire the impressive architecture of the city that came to symbolise America’s greatness and take a bite out of the D. You will also ride The People Mover, the elevated monorail transport system so beloved of Detroiters.
The walk will take in all the major landmarks and some local favourites. You will admire the world-famous Fox Theater, an elaborately decorated picture palace built in 1928. Such is its cultural and architectural significance that it has been declared a US National Historic Landmark. The tour will also pass the Renaissance Center, a seven-skyscraper complex that houses GM’s headquarters, and Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers play their baseball matches.
There will also be time to visit the awe-inspiring Guardian Building, an imposing art deco 40-storey skyscraper that is also a US National Historic Landmark. The Guardian is famed for its use of pewabic pottery and monel metal, making it a standout example of the dynamism of the Roaring Twenties.
Prepare yourself to take a bite of the D with a coney dog, Detroit’s meaty and spicy hot dog variant, or a piece of baklava in Greektown. You will also be able to catch a glimpse of Canada, on the other side of the Detroit River.
