With the Djerba Island Tour you can enjoy the blissful scenery and sunshine of Tunisia’s island of dreams, whilst delving deeper into its rich historic past. Highlights include the drive over the ancient causeway, the beguiling village of Guellala and Djerba’s bustling capital, Houmt-Souk.

According to Greek mythology, Ulysses and his crew were the first discoverers of this magical island. Legend says that Homer then consequently dubbed it the ‘island of the lotus eaters’ after they were all bewitched by a diet of lotus flowers. Nowadays it is the natural beauty of Djerba that often delights and enchants all those who land upon its shores. Your memorable tour starts with a drive from the mainland over the original Roman causeway. Have your camera ready for the perfect photo opportunity as you stop at the low rock bridge, built by the Romans during the time of Hadrian. Then it’s on to the charming whitewashed village of Guellala and Djerba’s capital of ceramics. The distinctive pottery is characterised by its yellow background, geometric patterns and figurative designs. You are given time to visit some of the many shops and caverns that are brimming with earthenware pots, bowls and other goods, and it is the ideal place to snap up a souvenir. You can also visit the Guelllala Museu for an introduction into traditional Berber life.

Next you will travel to Djerba to see the ancient El Ghriba Synagogue (also known as Djerba Synagogue). This 4th century BC enigma and important pilgrimage site is Africa’s oldest Synagogue. All bright blue tiles and pillars, it is said to contain stone from Solomon’s temple. Finally you travel onwards to Houmt-Souk, Djerba’s pretty capital where you can wander around the maze-like streets and haggle for bargains in the souks.
