Program details
This full day tour is an ideal introduction to the natural and cultural heritage of North Island. You’ll visit the world famous caves at Waitomo with their weird and wonderful limestone rock formations and magical glow worms and the charming lakeside settlement of Rorotua with its famous geysers and mud pools and strong Maori cultural tradition.
After an early start we’ll head southwards through the lush, rolling farmland of the Waikato and King Country regions. There’ll be time for a morning snack as you drive past Rangiriri, the location of a historic Maori Land Wars site.
On arriving at the township of Waitomo you can enjoy a magical guided tour through the world famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves with their amazing stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations, formed over thousands of years by the constant dripping of water. The highlight of the tour has to be a silent boat ride through the Glow Worm Grotto - a subterranean cavern lit up by the lights of thousands of tiny glow worms.
The tour continues in the afternoon with a pleasant drive to Rotorua. En route you can enjoy a delicious packed lunch before stopping at a traditional sheep farm where you can see a sheep shearing demonstration as well as a sheep dog trial.
Once at Rotorua, you’ll head straight for Te Puia, one of New Zealand's foremost cultural venues to enjoy a performance where ancient and modern Maori stories are told through song, dance, poi and stick games. Go on a guided tour of the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve with its silica terraces, bubbling mud pools and unique geothermal vegetation, not to mention the world-famous Pohutu Geyser. The Maori Arts and Crafts Institute is also well worth a visit with its fascinating exhibition of carvings and weaving.
After the Te Puia experience we return to Auckland. A delicious afternoon snack including traditional Maori rewana bread will be served en route.
