Explore Slovakia’s beautiful and charismatic capital, Bratislava, and discover the rich culture of this historic city. Walk through the narrow alleys of its picturesque old town and make your way to its major landmarks such as the impressive Primatial Square, the largest church in Slovakia St Martin’s Cathedral, and many enchanting streets such as Biela, Venturska and Panska Street.
Bratislava’s diverse history is immediately evident when strolling through its historic old town. Given its geographical location, bordering both Austria and Hungary, the city was strategically hugely important for various empires of years gone by and it changed hands on various occasions. On this brief walking tour your guide will bring the past to life as you learn the city’s fascinating history from the days of the Habsburg dynasty and the Austro-Hungarian Empire through to the breakup of Czechoslovakia.
Marvel at the mix of baroque, gothic, renaissance and modern architecture as you head to the beautiful Primatial Square, once home to extravagant public occasions and a bustling marketplace. Nowadays the square is the perfect spot to relax and take in the best of Bratislava with its renaissance fountain and 15th century Old Town Hall. From here wander down to St Martin’s Cathedral, the country’s most important place of worship and where monarchs of the past were crowned. Admire the architecture and soak up the atmosphere in Franciscan Square and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the famous bronze statues that are found in its surrounding streets and alleyways.
