Travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber by way of the perfectly named Romantic Road. Perched high above the Tauber River Valley, this picturesque town is surrounded by the original city walls. As you meander around the cobbled streets you can admire the traditional half-timber houses that characterise this quaint town.



Rothenburg offers many fascinating sights. The town hub is the Market Square, with its renowned St George’s fountain and endless shops and cafes, and majestic Town hall. Climb the 241 steps to the top of its tower for the best vantage point of the village.



The brave hearted can visit the medieval Crime Museum, with its gory array of torture instruments. If that isn’t your cup of tea, visit the Toy and Doll Museum, filled with toys from days long gone. Don’t miss the chance to snap the most photographed place in Germany as you stand on Plönlein, a triangular square formed by two roads guarded by two 12th century towers – Siebers Tower and Kobolzell Gate.



The magnificent Castle gardens are a must see, and so is St James’s church, where you can admire the fabulous altar carving by Riemenschneider, known as the Holy Blood Altar because it is said to contain a drop of Christ’s blood.



Rothenburg is a shoppers delight, with many shops offering souvenirs such as beer steins, cuckoo clocks and beautifully hand-crafted Christmas ornaments. So go on a spree and enjoy!
