Come with us on this magical tale of two cities and discover Heidelberg, the most romantic of sites, and the pretty medieval town of Rothenburg.Highlights- Explore the world famous Heidelberg Castle
- Travel along the Romantic Road to Rothenberg
- Take a picture of the most photographed spot in Germany - Plönlein
Begin by exploring Heidelberg. Located on the banks of the River Neckar, it is a city brimming with baroque charm, from its narrow winding streets to its fabulous Gothic and Renaissance buildings. You can explore the world famous castle, now partially in ruins, the large courtyard and terrace and see the Heidelberg Tun, one of the largest wine barrels in the world. Stroll around the mediaeval town centre and delight at the impressive sights of the Old Bridge, Karlstor, the Church of the Holy Spirit, and the House of the Knights, with its imposing Renaissance facade. Heidelberg is also home to Germany’s oldest university.
Your day continues along the Romantic Road to Rothenberg ob der Tauber, perched high above the Tauber valley. Leap back in time as you wander through the cobbled streets lined with the traditional half-timbered houses. This marvellously preserved town, still surrounded by the original city walls, offers an impressive array of sights to visit. Don’t miss the chance to snap a pic of the most photographed spot in Germany, the Plönlein, a square formed by two roads guarded by two 12th century towers. Enrich your visit by delving into the Mediaeval Crime Museum, the Doll and Toy Museum and the Christmas Museum. Rothenberg is also a shopper’s delight with lovely souvenir shops selling carvings, glasses, beer steins and a lovely array of handcrafted Christmas tree decorations.
