Program details
For seven decades after its independence Brazil was an empire and nowhere is this imperial legacy more visible today than in Petropolis, the fabled City of Hydrangeas. Here this glorious past is revived in the opulent residences, squares and streets full of flowers that evoke the good old times. The historic centre exudes the pomp and sophistication of the imperial period and the power and optimism of the republican period. This nostalgic air is further enhanced by the unspoiled nature of the verdant valleys and rolling hills in the surrounding countryside.
See the famous Palácio de Cristal, built to hold agricultural and industrial exhibitions, and also a stage to parties and banquets; the Gothic revival São Pedro de Alcântara Cathedral and the Imperial Museum, which is located in what was the summer palace of Dom Pedro II, the second and last emperor. Contemplate the great beauty of Petropolis in these landmark buildings.
As the summer resort of choice of the 19th century nobility, Petropolis is a city of many great homes such as the Palácio Rio Negro and the Palácio Amarelo and more modest but equally significant residences as that of aviation pioneer Santos Dumont. Wander the bustling streets or stroll along tree-lined canals admiring the city’s often faded glory. Avenida Koeller is perhaps the most stunning street in the whole city, lined mansions and with the cathedral as the centrepiece. Petropolis is just over an hour’s drive through lush countryside from Rio de Janeiro, and the journey offers a revealing insight of rural Brazilian life.
