Program details
Discover the wonders of the town of Heraklion on the Island of Crete. Near to the Knossos ruins, Heraklion is the largest city on the island. Your tour will allow you to divide your time, first taking in the famed Heraklion street market, then carrying on to town itself.
The market street is a Greek institution not to be missed. As you roam the market, you'll see stalls selling a myriad of goods from clothing, shoes, textiles and embroidery, fruits and vegetables. Sure to be something to appeal to your tastes, check out the local fresh cheeses, thyme, or honey - a few of the many traditional offerings in the market. Ramble to the top of the street, and admire the Bembo Fountain, a Venetian work of art from the late 1500s. If the delicious smells have made you hungry, veer a bit off course, and check out some of the lovely restaurants on the side streets offering plenty of Cretan delights. After touring the market, you will continue on to Heraklion town. A city with a rich history, you have many options. From the 25th of August Street, walk to either St. Titus' Cathedral, a remarkable church, or the Loggia, an example of Venetian architecture, once a club for nobility. If you're in the mood to relax or sample some Greek cuisine, head to either Freedom or Lion's Square and do some people watching while you have a bite to eat. Just a mere sample of your many options.
While on your tour of Heraklion Market and Town, take in the sights and sounds of Crete, friendly faces, and breathtaking historical architecture.
