This full day tour provides an in-depth look into the life and times of the third US president, Thomas Jefferson at his home, Monticello. Leave Washington DC behind as you take in the picturesque Virginia countryside on the way to Charlottesville. Continuing up the mountainside you reach the grand estate of Monticello.
Set amongst beautiful grounds, it was here that Jefferson raised his family and continued to live after the death of his beloved wife Martha Skelton. President, surveyor, musician and artist, Jefferson is a most fascinating character. As primary author of the Declaration of Independence, he is a vitally important figure of American history. In a visit to the Jefferson Visitor and Smith Education Centers, you are enlightened about Jefferson's life, times, and lasting legacies. A new introductory film provides you with a brief biography of the great man that is developed further by four innovative exhibitions. A hands-on discovery room provides interactive media for an exciting learning experience.
After building up an appetite you may wish to indulge in some traditional southern fare typical of the Jefferson’s era at the renowned Michie Tavern. In this Virginian landmark that has been serving food for over 2oo years; your wait staff serve you in period attire. Munch on delights such as southern fried chicken, hickory-smoked pork barbecue, stewed tomatoes, black-eyed peas, buttermilk biscuits and much more. You may explore the history of this 18th century tavern with a self-guided tour of the beautiful building and the shops retailing items relevant to the era.
